The Academy Awards – Meh. The Independent Spirit Awards – Woot Woot!

The 2018 Academy Awards showed once again that it’s business as usual in Hollywood. The main breakout of the evening was Jordan Peele’s win for Best Original Screenplay for Get Out (which we rated a 3 but go see it anyway). Another bright spot was the award for Best Picture going to The Shape of Water which we rated a 6.5 so support it too!

In contrast, at the 2018 Independent Spirit Awards held the same weekend, there was plenty of good news for women!

Winners included:
Best First Feature: Ingrid Goes West – 5
Best Screenplay: Greta Gerwig for Lady Bird – 8
Best First Screenplay: Emily V. Gordon, Kumail Nanjiani for The Big Sick – 4 (go see it anyway!)
Best Editing: Tatiana S. Riegel for I, Tonya – 5.5

We’re not surprised to see that independent movies are good places for women. These movies can be harder to get to due to limited releases but make the effort and support them however you can. Independent movies can turn into big name movies through groundswell efforts. Look at Lady Bird and The Big Sick as good examples.
